Executive Order 9066 - Racism, Endurance, Heroism
Inspired by history, artist Chris Demarest presents a visual interpretation of life in World War 2 for Japanese Americans at home and on the front lines.
On display January–April 2026, Executive Order 9066 features the work of artist Chris Demarest, presenting a visual interpretation of Japanese American life during World War II, both at home and on the front lines.
Demarest’s interest in this history began decades ago, inspired by stories his mother shared about the sudden removal of her Japanese American neighbors in Los Angeles during the war. That sense of injustice stayed with him and later shaped his artistic path.
In 2011, Demarest launched a public painting project honoring Americans who experienced World War II, working from period photographs and inviting visitors to share their stories. This led him to research and paint Japanese American history, including visits to Manzanar and the Japanese American Museum in Los Angeles.
After learning about Bainbridge Island’s unique experience, Demarest completed a residency at the Bainbridge Public Library in 2016, painting publicly and collecting local stories. The Bainbridge History Museum is pleased to welcome him back and share how history continues to connect artists and community.
